ArtTheorySnippet.m4v Watch on Posterous

Here's a fun look into a short film I was working on which I’ve decided to bench for the time being and maybe return to one day. It was called ART THEORY and the idea behind it was to be a counterpoint to all the other over the top CG shorts that people were creating. I thought it might be interesting to try and create an almost Woody Allen approach to the CG short. Very few shots, all lockdowns and let the dialogue drive the piece versus physical gags. The idea was to have two grad students wandering a modern art museum discussing the works.

Even though ART THEORY is a work in progress and will not be finished as intended, I’ve definitely fallen in love with these characters and I have another section of dialogue between them that I think I will refine and re-imagine into a new short sometime soon.

I like to take long walks and explore new and interesting places. One day back in the early 2000’s I was on a walkabout in Los Angeles when I started to notice all the weird little details hidden all over the city. I found myself strangely interested in the little sticker and paper graffiti art that were hidden on the back of streetlights or under an overpass. It sort of became a fun treasure hunt for me. I ignored the stickers of self promotion (people trying to hype a dot com and like) and was much more interested in the anonymous illustration or idea someone would post. I’ve been taking photos of this art for a long time now and I thought I would share a few instead of just letting them collect dust on my hard drive.

*I specifically left out any Shepard Fairey, Mr. Brainwash or Banksy. I figure eveyone knows them already.

I've been thinking a lot about my own work lately, seeking out inspiration and ideas from all types of sources from photography and books to paintings and even old nature documentaries. Which led me once again to thinking about my favorite contemporary painter, Walton Ford. I don't know who out there follows the art world, but Walton is definitely one of my all time favorites. I think some of his appeal to me springs from his naturalist / Audubon society subject matter and the way he is able to string his own distinct narrative through his work which at first glance the viewer may not pick up on, but might realize on future viewings or on a subliminal level.

Anywho... if you're not familiar with his work there is an awesome tome put out by Taschen you can order online. I've never gotten to see any of his paintings first hand, but I hope to one day.

I recently had the pleasure of meeting a globe trotting adventurer from Down Under here on walkabout for a few months. She made a real impression on me. Definitely need to visit Melbourne sometime.

Back in 2001 I was in San Francisco for a few months and I decided to go over to Yerba Buena Island where they were filming the show "Battlebots." I was invited to go backstage to do some photography. I was recently going through those old photos when I noticed that I had accidentally taken a photo of Grant Imahara long before there was ever a Mythbusters show. It's funny the things you discover when you go through your old work.

Shelly Boozer is one of my favorite character models. She looks different every time I get a chance to photograph her. I'm happy to say I've never taken a picture of her that looks like her!

Last month I went out to Joshua Tree with my friend/model/LA Celeb Jackie Cooper. I've been getting burnt out on digital work and wanted to shoot something sort of primal and raw. All the images were taken on a Holga Camera with FujiPro400 film. The Holga is a tricky camera because it's not twin lens reflex so you can't see your focus. You sort of have to best guess where your focus is and hope for the best when you get your film developed. (It definitely makes you appreciate the little LCD screen in the back of your digital camera). There was also no shutter settings, it has a fixed shutter of about 1/100th of a second. So there was no way to set exposure. Needless to say, I loved this shoot. Old school. 

Ask for it at Hennessy + Ingalls! They'll say, "Never heard of it."
